C. Stuart White, Jr., AIA
Principal

Stuart White joined Banwell Architects in 1968. He has developed a reputation as an architect of highly energy-efficient buildings, and one of his projects recently received a LEED™ gold designation – the first LEED™ project in New England!

Mr. White has lectured widely on architecture and the environment. He has served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the environmental studies program at Dartmouth College, and was an energy consultant to the Brookhaven National Labs from 1980 to 1984 with a focus on passive solar energy utilization. He has been published internationally, and several of his projects have received regional and national design awards.

Mr. White served as Chairman of the Task Force on Sustainable Architecture for the NH AIA in 1993, 1994, and 1995.

World Learning, School for International Training (Brattleboro, VT) $20M
Various projects to complete 2001 Master Plan, including new academic buildings and a number of renovation and addition projects, to be implemented over the next ten years. Campus contains 20 primary buildings and various smaller outbuildings, including older buildings from the original estate (circa 1900), a number of wood-frame residential and academic structures from the 1960s and ‘70s, and two new/renewed buildings from the 1990s.

Society for the Protection of NH Forests, Conservation Center (Concord, NH)
Phase 1, 1979:
Visitors’ Center, Office Building, Demonstration Energy Conservation Building (US DOE Passive Solar Energy Award, American Wood Council Design Award)
Phase II, 1990: Office Addition, super insulation, daylighting.
Phase III, 2001: 11,400 square foot Office Addition. Awarded Gold Certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) program; first LEED™ certified project in New England. Building opened to coincide with Society’s 100th anniversary in April, 2001. Design emphasis includes air-tight envelope, water conservation, air quality, daylighting, native certified green forest products, recycled projects, construction waste recycling, district heating from central wood chip plant.

Mason Library at Keene State College (Keene, NH)
Two-phase renovation/addition to existing library complex with controlled daylighting at reading room.

Dresden Schools (Hanover, NH)
Design of 157,000 square feet renovations and 30,000 square feet new construction on existing site for High School. New 104,000 square foot Middle School on a new site.

Dartmouth Skiway (Lyme, NH)
A new base lodge to replace the outgrown 45-year old original building. The design honors the skiing and Outing Club traditions at Dartmouth College and demonstrates sustainable design principles with emphasis on native timber frame, air-tight envelope design, daylighting, and air quality.

Addition and renovations to Banwell Architects’ designed church of 1974.

Concord High School (Concord, NH) $20M
Design of 110,000 square feet new spaces and 210,000 square feet of renovations for a Concord High School population of 1800. Phase I construction Fall 1994, Phase II 1995.

Chestnut Mountain Resort (Galena, IL)
Phased ski village master plan and architectural design including ticketing, rental & repair, retail, ski patrol, day care, restaurant, and housing.

Waterville Valley Resort (Waterville, NH)
Upgrade of original base complex and reorganization of skier services, including food service areas, retail, ski school, skiwee and daycare, rental and signage.

Whitetail Ski & Summer Resort (Mercersburg, PA)
Design of 44,000 square foot base Village including day lodge, rental, ski school and skiwee.

Dartmouth College Boathouse (Hanover, NH)
Spaces for the crew and related activities, including a function room with fireplace and deck overlooking the Connecticut Rive. The boathouse incorporates traditional riverfront architecture and Northern New England building shapes.

Pinckney Boathouse at Brewster Academy (Wolfeboro, NH)
5,984 square feet new construction, including meeting rooms, assembly space and boat storage. The building is reminiscent of turn-of-the-century Lakes Region architecture with its shingled siding and native stone foundation and quickly became a focal point of the entire campus. The large meeting room features an oversized fireplace, hardwood dance floor, large bay window and balcony.

Lisbon Regional Schools (Lisbon, NH)
50,000 square foot addition to the K – 12 Lisbon School.
